African champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, began their Africa Cup of Nations quaifying series, with a shock 3-2 loss to Congo at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar on Saturday.
The hosts took an early, after Efe A.mbrose got the final touch to an Ahmed Musa free-kick, before the Congolese stormed down the right almost immediately to level scores.
Claude LeRoy’s team took the lead before the interval, with a well-worked goal and were two goals in front after the referee awarded a penalty in the second half. Nosa Igiebor missed from two yards out, before Gbolahan Salami smashed in from a scramble inside the box to set up a grandstand finish. In the end, it was not enough, as the Eagles could not find an equalizer in the six minutes added on.
